The size of a garden does not influence its art advantages. Therefore it is not necessary to worry, if it seems to you that your garden is not big enough, or on the contrary, is too big. But, thinking over the general composition of the garden or planning its separate sites, it is necessary to remember that all its parts have to be proportional to each other and to the whole garden, to structures and landings. The modern architecture of a country house is more often eclectic, and the manor itself seldom corresponds to any historical period. As a rule, the garden lay-out is combined. The representation zone of smart entrance and near the house can be quite often made in regular style, but further the manor is almost always made out in a free, landscape lay-out. And therefore before to start to work, it is necessary to define, which water device will mostly suit your garden style.

If the architecture of the house and the decoration of surrounding  space is made in classical style, and in furnish it is a lot of stone, it will be most pertinent to organize a formal pool with a fountain, a channel that effectively cuts the beautiful pavement or a wall fountain in the South European style. If the house is executed in Europe tradition or is similar to country style, it is most logical to build a natural pond, as in the nature, or stream but a rough one. By the way, from all possible variants of water devices «the natural” pond and stream in the overwhelming majority of cases are suitable for any court yard. Besides a pond executed as a natural reservoir in which grow and live various water plants, small fishes, predatory bugs and plankton, frogs and tritons, needs less care than other ponds. It perfectly enters in any landscape, and looks pertinently everywhere.

Flowers are organs of sexual reproduction produced by the angiosperms (phylum anthophyta), the largest phylum of photosynthetic organisms, with roughly 250,000 species. This large number represents a great diversity of flower types, but all flowers have some common structural elements.

Flower Parts

Flowers are modified shoots bearing modified leaves. In the typical flower, the modified leaves can be grouped into four sets based on appearance and function: sepals, petals, stamens, and pistils. The sepals and petals are lowermost on the shoot toward the sides of the flower. The stamens and pistils are at the tip of the shoot at the inside. While sepals and petals are easy to see, stamens and pistils are often visible only when the flower is closely examined. Two other important parts are the pedicel, a stalk on which flowers are frequently borne, and the top of the pedicel, called the receptacle, to which the other flower parts are typically attached.

Of the four main parts, the sepals are generally the most leaf like and generally are attached to the bottom of the receptacle. Sepals protect the immature flower during the bud stage. Flowers typically have three to eight sepals, depending on the species. Collectively, the sepals in a flower are called the calyx. Above the sepals are the petals. Although flattened like the sepal, each petal is usually soft and colored white, yellow, pink, blue, purple, orange, maroon, or even brown. Petals attract insects, hummingbirds, bats, or other animals, aiding the reproductive process. Usually, the number of petals in a flower will be the same as the number of sepals. Collectively, the petals in a flower are called the corolla.

The stamens, located inside the petals, are composed of a small anther (ball-shaped, egg-shaped, or tubular) and a threadlike filament connecting the anther to the rest of the flower. The anther, in turn, is composed of two or four tiny chambers, within which powdery pollen grains are produced and stored. Each grain of pollen contains the immature sperm of the plant. Thus, the stamens function as the male part of the flower in sexual plant reproduction, and they may number from one to dozens. The term androecium refers collectively to all the stamens within a flower.

The pistils form the final set of parts. Each pistil is often shaped like a vase, although the shape varies. The ovary, the base of the pistil, is swollen and hollow. The wall of the ovary, called the pericarp, is typically green, and the hollow space in the ovary is called the locule. Within the locule are one or more tiny globular ovules, each containing an egg nucleus and thus functioning as the female structure in sexual reproduction. In addition to the ovary, the pistil is typically composed of two or more parts: the style, a slender necklike structure above the ovary, and the stigma, a swollen area at the top of the style that traps pollen grains with minute hairs covered by a sticky, sugary film. While most flowers have only one pistil, many have several pistils, attached to the receptacle. The pistils within a flower are collectively called the gynoecium.

Native and normative shrubs have many uses, both in private gardens and as elements in commercial and civic landscaping. Shrubby willows and alders function as soil stabilizers, preventing erosion naturally along waterways. Other shrubs are natural windbreaks that reduce wind flow over open soils. Farmers value shrubby windbreaks that preserve barren farm soils during fall and winter months, when the land is barren and topsoil is especially liable to be blown away during winter storms. For much the same reason, homeowners may plant certain types of shrubs at strategic locations along the boundaries of the yard to reduce air flow.

Many shrubs are economically important as landscape ornamentals. They are prized for the beauty, variety, pattern, and color of their leaves, buds, flowers, or fruits. The color, shape, and texture of their leaves are all valued qualities for which shrubs are appreciated and used. Their shape, texture, pattern, and even the intricate contrast and pattern of their leafless twigs in winter can enhance the beauty and interest of a garden landscape.

Food Sources

In addition to their uses in gardens, many shrubs are important sources of foods for wildlife and for humans. Fruits of blackberries, blueberries, huckleberries, currents, gooseberries, plums, and hazelnuts are but a few of the foods obtained from shrubs. Many, such as blueberries and raspberries, are made into pies. Some currents and gooseberries are key components of jams and spreads. Still others, such as plums, cherries, and grapes, are eaten as fruits or used in the preparation of jams, jellies, pies, as cooking ingredients, or used for other baked goods. Some fruits are gathered only in the wild, but many others are cultivated. Cranberries, blueberries, and blackberries are cultivated varieties derived from hundreds of years of selecting and cultivating wild native shrubs. Fruits of plums, cherries, and especially the serviceberries, or Juneberries, are used to make fine and natural wines, and it may be that serviceberries were named because they provided the earliest fruits that could be made into wines for the Eucharist during church services.

Ecologically, shrubs are also important for wildlife. They provide food, shelter, and resting and nesting areas for a wide variety of birds. For example, at least forty-six species of birds feed on elderberry fruits.

Medicinal Uses

By 1812 Johann Jacob Paul Moldenhawer had shown that plant tissue was composed of independent cells, and in 1826 Henri Milne-Edwards determined that all animal tissues were formed from globules.

Flowering plants (angiosperms) are grown in gardens for their beauty and their fragrant aromas. They and their relatives can also be grown for food. Myriad flowering plant types are grown in the world’s gardens. Most popular flowering garden plants are in the rose family (Rosaceae, about three thousand species) and the lily family (Liliaceae, about forty five hundred species), which together make up a wide variety of herbs, bushes, and trees. Also quite popular are members of the iris family, Iridaceae, which includes crocuses. Lilies and irises belong to the order Liliales (about eight thousand species) of herbaceous flowering plants. Other well known plants of this order are tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths.

Roses and Lilies

The most popular garden plants are roses and lilies. Rose is the common name for members of the family Rosaceae, a family of one hundred genera and three thousand species. Included are important fruit and ornamental species, including the familiar genus Rosa.

The development of annual plants – from crops and before maturing of new seeds – occurs within spring and summer. In autumn they die. We can concern to the same group some thermophilic perennial plants that are cultivated as annual plants. Annual plants finish their life cycle during one vegetative period, they live their life from a seed till a new crop of seeds and die off. Some long-term plants are cultivate as annual plants, they are grown up only during one vegetative period, and next year they are sawn again as they cannot winter in an open ground (vervain, carnation, cardinal-flower,  lion’s pharynx,  nasturtium,  petunia, etc.).

Annual plants are grow up according to the following scheme:

Spring – crops indoors on sprouts or in a ground on its place, landing of sprouts or thinning of soil shoots.

Summer – taking care including watering, top dressing, loosening, weeding and cutting off the inflorescences that finished blossoming, gathering of seeds.

Autumn – cleaning of finished blossoming plants.

The rich specific and high-quality assortment of annual garden plants allows to choose a considerable amount of annual plants, that propagate not by their selves but cropping seeds in an open ground.

More thermophilic types should be sowed after cold spring morning (frosts early in the morning) will stop. Also directly in an open ground are sown seeds of the plants which cannot bare replantation (lining-out) as their root system difficultly restores the soaking hairs develop only on root branches that are deeply in soil (poppy, gillyflower, mignonette, lupine, nasturtium, californica). In an open ground are also sown also seeds of fast-growing types of plants, such, as string bean decorative, nails, helipterum roseum ​plenum, marigolds. For reception of additional cutting, landings are made in different terms.

The set annual flowers plant includes approximately 200-250 types, not including the rare types. And it promptly replenishes both at the expense of wild-growing, and by means of selection. In recent years it was outlined the tendency of reception of annual forms of plants from perennial plants. The types of plants that blossom in the same year when they were made from the following perennial plants: leucanthemum, yarrow, columbine and even perennial phlox.

Advantages of annual plants:

Annual plants quickly develop and are capable to decorate the garden. With their help it is possible to create a new flower bed for one season, to decorate a ladder, a verandah, or a fence.

Annual plants quickly blossom and blossom long and plentifully up to frosts.

A large choice of forms of plants from undersized to grown in hanging pots or vases, from high to twisted, that allows to use annual plants in any types of flower decoration.

An improbable richness of colours and the shades, allowing to create any colour combinations.

Are absolutely irreplaceable summer plants in vessels with small volume of earth: window and balcony boxes, vases, ornamental flowerpots, pendant baskets and containers.

Compositions from summer plants can be updated every year and their place can be changed.

Summer plants with powerful roots, for example asters, marigolds, houstonianums it can be dig out and to replaced when they blossom, summer plants in containers can be landed and replaced when they blossom during the whole year.

It is important that among annual plants there are cold-resistant, drought-resistant and plants that don’t need much care which can be also sown directly in the ground.

What is the Landscape Gardening

Landscape gardening is a complex of landscape works by creation of decorative compositions, planting of trees and bushes, creation of green hedges, lawns and flower beds.

At landscape gardening are used following receptions and design elements:

Planting of Trees

As a matter of fact, any garden cannot be named a garden if trees are not planted in it. It is one of the basic and obligatory elements of gardening. Trees create special comfortable atmosphere in a garden: they allow to take cover from scorching solar beams, improve the garden microclimate, create a natural barrier from a dust and to noise. Besides, trees possess the special favorable power allowing a person to strengthen his forces, to take off weariness, to recover from daily stress.

A special direction in landscape gardening is landing of big-sized trees. There are a lot of disputes about the expediency of this tree-planting method, but it is necessary to accept that this is the only way to change the most deserted site in an adult, decorative garden in one season. Very often the landings of big-sized trees are made during the winter period when plants are in “dream” condition. At observance the technology of landing it is possible to land not only coniferous and deciduous trees, but also fruit – apple-trees, pears, plums, etc.

Landing of Bushes

Bushes are used in landscape design for many reasons: they allow to give to a garden an additional volume, fill it with colour and structure, help to hide modest sites and to disguise different constructions. Bushes serve for protection of a garden against extraneous noise, dust and excessive views. Many bushes differ by decorative flowering, beautiful autumn colouring of foliage and the fruits remaining on a plant for a long time that allows to decorate a garden even during winter time. The majority of bushes are unpretentious and can please the view with their presence in the garden for a long time.

Green Hedges

This element of design of a garden has both practical, and aesthetic function. First of all, as appears from the name, it is a fence, so it’s urged to isolate a garden or its part from extraneous views, and also dust and noise. For creation of green hedges can be used as deciduous: (avellane, a honeysuckle, spirea, cotoneaster, dog rose, hawthorn, barberry, dogwood, and many other things), and coniferous breeds: (western thuja, a fur-tree, european larch).

Depending on the designer’s thoughts, and shown requirements of a hedge can be short-cut or freely growing. For a short-cut hedge it is necessary to select unpretentious plants with the good branching, easily transferring a hairstyle and forming a dense crone.

Special reception of landscape decoration are short-cut figures from the bushes, being a subject of long-term work and pride of their founders.

Creation of Flower Beds

This is one of the most favourite receptions both for a beginning, and a professional with experience. Flower beds are capable to give mood and style to a garden and to tell a lot about the owner of a garden. Flowers can tell that it is impossible to put into words.

Flower beds can have different forms, can be constructed in any or formal style. For creation of flower compositions can be used both annual, perennial flowers. Annual flowers bring in our garden a lot of colours and bright flowering since spring to the first frosts. More reserved in a colour palette perennials are not capable to blossom for such a long time, but skillfully picked up in a composition will give to your garden a good decorative effect, replacing each other during all season.

A special group is made by the bulbous plants bringing special pleasure by the early-spring flowering after long monotonous winter. And in the autumn, unexpectedly appearing from under the earth, they are capable to clear us from autumn melancholy and to add to the garden gentle, quivering paints.

Stony Gardens

Become recently fashionable the element of landscape decoration of a garden, a stony garden will harmoniously enter in any style of landscape decision.

Even more often in a composition at creation a stony garden include not only truly Alpine plants, but also flowers habitual to us, bushes and even small trees. Stony gardens are easily entered in surrounding landscape, do not need too much care and look very naturally. The elements included in them, such as bridges, ladders, reservoirs, streams, rifts will add to your garden originality and decorative effect.

Vertical Landscape Gardening

This reception allows to expand the garden space, including vertical spaces in a composition. By means of vertical landscape gardening you can add some privacy to your garden, create shadow corners, decorate unattractive constructions or get rid of boring monotony of a fence.

Vertical landscape gardening can be used not only in country house arrangement, but also in city conditions: at dressing of balconies, loggias or even house walls.

In conditions of modern world with an abundance of the newest technologies, modern technical achievements, a person who lives in modern mad rhythm more and more has sensations that he needs something natural and beautiful. There is no secret that we feel more comfortably only in the places allowing us to touch wildlife, whether these are magnificent city parks, cosy squares, rest at sea coast or on the bank of a river. And a green oasis on your own garden site will give to the owner pride and satisfactions and becomes his favourite vacation spot.

There a lot of styles of garden decoration, but the choice of plants and materials is even more various. The defining factors in garden planning are: climate, soil, environment and the functional purpose.

The kind is something uniform, got by the general idea. The kind in landscape design is a certain treatment of key rules and receptions of a lay-out, equipment, and colouring of a small garden. The concept of style includes garden’s planning decision, the usage of certain vegetative forms and their combinations, the type of decorative paths and even the form of the garden equipment. The choice of style of a garden depends on landscape features of a site (its configuration, environment, and sizes) and is defined by architectural style in which the basic constructions are built. But mostly it’s the matter of taste and reflexion of the owner’s lifestyle of a garden and even is more than that – the reflexion of his outlook. The modern kinds of a small garden only adjoin with the views of gardens of the past.

Growing and getting old, the garden passes not only through age borders, but also through style borders, getting in each country national shapes because a garden, and especially a small garden, is connected with the life of society.

It happens that to create a garden, to execute arbours, patio and the house in the same style is already impossible. But it is possible to add some separate details, in order to achieve certain unity. Without trying to impose our opinion and relation, we will try to give the characteristic of some most widespread style directions – both classical, and modern.

What to do with the flowers when we are going on vacation?

Summer – is the time of holidays and labour feats in the garden. This is the time of transformation of flower beds, rock gardens, and hunting time for new plants… During this happy period we absolutely forget about the plants remained on the window sills. But if to take care about their destiny before your departure, it is possible to avoid many losses. So, what to do, if you are going to be absent more than a week and it was impossible to find compliant relatives or neighbours who would agree to take care of your flowers. In our disposal there are six ways of water delivery to plants.

The first way

The plants covered with a transparent polyethylene package evaporate much less moisture and  can be left under such “cap” for a week. It is also noticed that even, as at full drying of a soil many plants, including gentle ferns, do not fade, being covered with this package. It is better for the package not to concern plants, i.e. it should be big enough big, and thin sticks-props will help to keep it on distance.

The second way

If you leave your apartment for a week or two, take away your plants from the southern window sills, and place the pots in the bigger pots or containers and fill all the emptiness with damp sphagnum or peat. Plentifully water the plants. Cover the surface of the substratum with a polyethylene package. So they can hold on without watering for some time. Tropical ferns and orchids can be transferred to the bathroom and placed on a lattice over the bathroom with water. They will sustain.

The third way

If your absence is longer than two weeks it is necessary to organise an automatic device for water delivery. For this purpose there are some schemes. Some of them you can make by yourself. For example, one end of a wick (old stockings, bandage, and other fabrics) is pushed by tweezers in the drainage aperture of the pot so that to touch the soil and the other end is placed into the capacity with water, placed under the pot. This capacity can be made of any suitable plastic container or a jar. It should be closed by cover with two holes, one for the wick, another for pouring water. This variant is compact, though the similar scheme can be incarnated in other type too. So, the wick can be put on the substratum, and its end immersed in the capacity with water which is placed above the object of watering.

On sale there are now wares with double bottom where the bottom part represents the tank for water. Cords connect water-supplies and substratum. As a whole this system functions by the similar capillary principle.

The fourth way

If the plants large enough or hygrophilous it is possible to place a two-liter large plastic bottle with the holes made in its bottom and cover  “headfirst” in the earth to fill it with water. Such “system” will provide plants with water for a long time.

The fifth way

The modern and quite perfect system named «touch system of drop watering». Of course you won’t be able to make such system by yourself but in special stores it costs rather much but this system worth it. Its main element is a ceramic sensor control in the form of a carrot. It is filled with water and inserted into the soil. The soil dries up and the sensor control gives it water. When water-supplies in the sensor control come to end it automatically arrives from the tank through a rubber hose. This system is compact and looks very much civil (unlike the turned plastic bottle), and the main thing is that the plant does not suffer neither from lack of moisture, nor from its overabundance because surplus of a moisture is soaked up in the sensor control.

After some time the calcium contained in tap water clogs up pores of the clay sensor control and it becomes water-proof. Usually its term of service is one season.

The sixth way

The most hi-tech and expensive way when plants are provided with drop watering, operated by timer. Such system in advance needs adjusting and connection to the water pipe. Necessarily test it before the departure. But with this system the plants should not be taken away from the window sills and it is possible to leave for a month or more. And it is only your choice.
